How do you tell if it is a genuine chocolate diamond or some type of gem stone?

The best you can do is to get a diamond grading report from the Gemological Institute of America. The reports tell you everything about the diamond, from the color, cut, clarity and how big the diamond is. The report will immediately know if the gem is fake or not.
The value of a diamond depends on its cut, its clarity, its colour and its carat weight. A local jeweler can give you the answer you want.

The quickest and easier is the fog test: a real diamond will disperse the heat from your breath immediately, the setting: such as 10k, 14k or 18k stamps inside the setting, anything with a C.Z (cubic zirconia) usually indicates that the diamond is not real, a jewelers loupe and also if it has rainbow reflections if you look at it from the top. You can also take it to a jeweler and get it evaluated.
