Well betta fish cannot be in tap water. It's like poison to them. They have to have treated water. I found out my betta was suffering when he wouldn't eat anything. Betta like to be out in the open so they can see movement and action. The living room is a good place.
If you can see that the fish is covered in slime or fungus or has white spots on it it is sick. If you don't keep it in at least a 4 gallon tank (3gallons of water) with a filter and heater and also change 50% of its water weekly it will get sick and die anyway. It's just a matter of look after the fishes water and the fish will be OK.
I cant realy list them all but go to www.bettatalk.com. Explore the site then you can find types of betta deseases and pictures of them.

Well, if you love your Betta fish, then it should live by itself. But if you add another Betta to your current Betta fish's tank, then they will start a fight because Betta Fish are Siamese fighting fish and if one Betta is in contact of another Betta, the possible reason would be a fight between them two.
A betta is a fish of the species Betta, especially Betta splendens, commonly known as the Siamese fighting fish.
You would surely be aware if Bettas have been spawing in your tank. If they have, and nothing else has been spawning in there, then in all probablility the tiny fish you can see will be Betta.
