Grade is determined by the amount of wear, nicks and scratches a coin has on it. In the following list you will see the various grades and their descriptions for the Indian Head Cent. Indian Head Cents G4.......The word "LIBERTY" is not visible on the headband of the headress. VG8....At least 3 letters of "LIBERTY" are readable on the headband. F12.....The word "LIBERTY" is completely visible. VF20...Slight but even wear on the word "LIBERTY" on the headband. EF40...The word "LIBERTY" is sharp and defined. All other details of the design are sharp. There is only slight wear on the end of the ribbon of the headdress along the side of the neck. MS60....No trace of wear. Some nicks and light scratches may be present. The coin may or may not have mint luster. MS61 - MS70.....No trace of wear. With each higher grade the coin will have fewer nicks and light scratches. At MS70 the coin is perfect with no wear, no nicks, no scratches.
There was never a silver Indian Head penny.
The 1903 Indian Head cent is a common coin most are valued at $1.00-$3.00
Wheat Back cents did not begin production until August, 1909. Any 1903 penny would be an Indian Head cent.
Wheat cents were struck from 1909 to 1958. If your coin is dated 1903 it's an Indian head cent.
Most Indian head pennies of 1909 are worth between $2.00 and $10.00. However, if the penny is an 1909 S Indian head then it would be worth between $400 to $600 depending on the value grade.

The Indian Head penny was not minted until 1859.
ALL 1903 Indian cents were struck in Philadelphia so none of them would have a mint mark. The first branch mint Indian cents were struck in 1908. See the Related Question for values.
It is called a "mini coin". They are manufactured as a novelty and have no numismatic {fancy word for coin collecting} value.
There is no such coin as a Indian Head Buckwheat penny, but a 1898 Indian Head cent in average condition is worth $1.00-$3.00
