How do you tell the mass of the Sun?

By using the law of gravity and the laws of motion.

The force of gravity is given by a mathematical formula:

F = G.M1.M2 / R^2

The force is deduced from the Earth's sideways acceleration in its orbit. The mass of the Earth is known from the force of its attraction on a standard mass. The size of the Earth and its orbit are known from other measurements. So the only unknown in that equation above is on of the two masses, so it can be calculated.
