The mint mark position on all Morgan dollars is above the DO in DOLLAR on the reverse.
In 1881 these coins were struck at 4 mints:
Philadelphia - no mint mark
San Francisco - "S"
New Orleans - "O"
Carson City - "CC"
The Denver Mint didn't begin production until 1906, and the Dahlonega Mint closed in 1861. On an 1881 silver dollar, it's probably an O for New Orleans, not a D.
The 1881 Morgan is very common, circulated coins are $17.00-$26.00 depending on how much wear the coin has. Mint State coins are in the $30.00-$50.00 range.
There is of course not really a "P" mint mark on coins minted in the 19th century, so I'm assuming you are using that letter to indicate that it's from Philly and not a branch mint. As of 09/2008 a Philadelphia-issue 1881 Morgan would retail for $16-20 depending on how worn it is.
The retail values for circulated coins are only $16.00-$22.00 and uncirculated coins are in the $23.00-$32.00 range. The 1881-S is the most available 19th century Morgan dollar in Mint State grades
The 1881-O Morgan Dollar is common, average retail value is $25.00-$35.00 for a example in circulated condition
Assuming the coin is circulated, the 1881-O Morgan is a common New Orleans Mint coin. Most coins have seen heavy use and show a lot of wear. Retail values are $37.00-$41.00
The 1881-O Morgan is a common coin, circulated coins have retail values of $17.00-$26.00 depending on grade. Mint State coins in the grade range of MS-60 to MS-63 have retail value of $30.00-$53.00
If it has one, it's on the reverse just above the letters DO in dollar. All mintmarks for Morgan dollars are in the same location.
The 1881-S Morgan dollar is the most available of all 19th century Morgan's in MS-60 or higher grades. It has average retail values of $45.00 in MS-60 an only $65.00 in MS-63 which are the typical Mint State grades for this Morgan. Usually this coin is very sharply struck, an a great coin to have for the value.
How do i tell what type of Morgan Dollar i have. its 1881 and i don'y understand this whole cc thing and can't find any markings on the coin. can someone help me identify the value of my coin?"CC" is on of the possible mint marks on a Morgan dollar. A mint mark indicates where a coin was made; for example, P (or none) means Philadelphia, S = San Francisco, etc. CC indicates Carson City, a mint that operated from 1870 to 1893.Mint marks can be in many different places depending on the coin. For a Morgan dollar the location is always the same - above the DO in DOLLAR, on the back.
