Disconnect one end of the cord from the circuit in question and connect an ohm meter to each end of the cord. Using the lowest range (Rx1) on your meter, it should read no higher than 1 ohm. The usual reading on a good ground is 0.1 ohm. If you don't get this reading, check for a loose or corroded connection or frayed wire strands. If you still have doubts, have the cord replaced. If it is impractical to use a meter, you may have to contact an electrician for assistance. I'm not sure of the circumstances under which you need to do the continuity test, but hopefully these steps and suggestions will help. I would also STRONGLY suggest that you shut off all power prior to doing any grounding checks just in case you accidentally touch a cord or terminal that is "hot" or "live" while taking a measurement. The resulting sparks will scare the heck out of you, knock out the meter and damage the surrounding area of where the arcing took place.

A lighting circuit is a continuity test on it's own. If anywhere on the loop the lights don't go on, it's an indication of fault. then u can further scrutinise that area.

If it's prior to connection of electrcity then u test from the beginning of the loop and the end of it. Put the tester across the live terminals in there.

1.with mains on ensure all light switches turned on.

2.Check and verify voltage indicator, isolate supply at mains, confirm, verify indicator again.

3.by removing small fuse in fitting or phase conductor from terminal block in fitting remove fitting/s from circuit.

4.join phase conductor to cpc (earth) at fitting

5.using calibrated and zeroed low ohm meter measure resistance phase to cpc at fuseboard this gives R1+R2, resistance of earth fault loop path. Operate switches. Meter going up and down confirms polarity and that sp switches are in phase conductor. Expect reading 1ohm or less depending on thickness of cable and length of circuit. Sufficient current must flow if fault to operate the MCB, blow the fuse or trip the RCD if fitted. Unlink ph from cpc at fittings but leave ph unconnected..

6.ensure all light switches on (but circuit stays isolated. Using 500v DC insulation tester measure resistance ph to cpc and ph to neutral. 1Megohm is min but expect. much better, usually better than 500 Meg.

7Reconnect fittings. Stop and think. If all ok turn back on and check it all works.

Continuity testing using a multimeter must be performed with power off. If the power is off and you measure across the two wires of a switch used to control a ceiling light fixture, you should measure the resistance of the wires and the bulb, which should approach zero ohms. Be aware that unless you disconnect at least one wire from the switch, you may be reading a path back into the power source. This technique would not work when either of two switches could turn the light on or off.
