You could test the pH of the substance with UI (universal indicator) paper, or some other indicator. If the pH is <7 or the paper is red/orange/yellow, then its acidic. If the pH is >7 or the paper is blue/purple, then its alkaline. In-between is neutral (green).
With a universal indicator or with litmus paper.

Put them all into separate alkaline conditions and then introduce their respective substrate and observe the reaction.
The test for proteins is called the Biuret test. This test is based on the principle that proteins react with copper sulfate in an alkaline solution to produce a violet color.
The alkaline solution in Biuret's test serves to denature the proteins present in the sample, breaking down their tertiary structure so that the peptide bonds can react with the copper ions in the reagent. This reaction results in the formation of a purple color, indicating the presence of proteins in the sample.
Measure the pH level. Above 7.0 is alkaline or "sweet".
to test if a solution is acidic, alkaline or basic
The confirmatory test for oxalate is the alkaline permanganate test. In this test, a sample containing oxalate ions is treated with potassium permanganate in a basic solution. The formation of a pink color indicates the presence of oxalate ions.
To check the pH of the item. Yellow is acid, and red is alkaline, I think.
"a deep-blue alkaline solution used to test for the presence of the http://www.answers.com/topic/aldehyde functional group, −CHO. " according to Columbia Encyclopedia, yes. :)
Cancer can be managed with an alkaline pH internal environment in the body. This is done through monitoring the body's blood, saliva, and urine with pH test strips to make sure they are all alkaline. Then dietary and lifestyle needs to be altered to a more alkaline state in order to maintain that pH, because cancer cannot survive in a basic/alkaline environment.
