Loud snoring can be a sign of sleep apnea, a common serious disorder in which breathing stops and starts repeatedly as you sleep. You will be able to tell if you have a sleep disorder if you are having trouble sleeping. If you can not fall asleep easily, or if you wake up many times at night, you probably have one.

Insomnia means you have trouble sleeping, but this happens to all of us occasionally. Usually when this happens you can't sleep 'no matter what' even if you've been awake for a long time. Generally, however, periodic sleeplessness can be directly related to a stressful event in our lives. When the stressful event is resolved, sleeping patterns usually return to whatever is normal for you.

For true insomniacs, however, this is a frequently recurring problem. Often insomniacs have trouble sleeping for days or even weeks at a time, catching only short periods of sleep after total exhaustion sets in. Obviously, this can be dangerously harmful to your health.

If your lack of sleep is affecting your ability to focus, or to function in your life, then you should see a doctor.

Most major hospitals have what they call Sleep Labs where the patient is wired with electrodes and sleep patterns are monitored. This data is used to help diagnose most common sleep disorders such as sleep apnea.

You will know if you go to bed at night but cannot sleep for 2 hours or more, or if you wake up at night and find yourself unable to sleep for the rest of the night.
