It depends what you think is distasteful. Did Shakespeare make dirty jokes? Absolutely. Some plays, like Romeo and Juliet, Measure for Measure, and Troilus and Cressida, have more than others.

What this is basically saying is that magic is just things that people make happen, but they or others don't know how. So technically, magic does exist, whether you're talking about spells or not. Think about it: when you see a magician, you don't know how he or she performs their tricks. This, by definition, is magic.
