There should be a manufacturer label on back or side of your computer (or bottom in case of a laptop), this should have the serial number information which helps the manufacturer track information about its production and sale. Typically it will have "S/N:" before the start of serial number. It is different from the operating system license number or product key which is on computers with Microsoft Windows.
However, the easiest way of finding the serial number is the following:
Run Command Prompt by typing "cmd" (without the quotes) in the search bar and hitting enter.
Type in the following (again, without the quotes): "wmic bios get serialnumber"
Make sure there isn't a space between the words serial and number. Hit enter.
It will output two lines, the first will say "SerialNumber" and the next line will have your serial number on it!
If possible, read it off the service tag on the bottom of the laptop. However, that didn't help me, as it is utterly unreadable! You can try the serial reveal utility from here: http://www.techsnack.net/how-to-search-and-backup-serial-number-in-your-computer That worked fine for me, but here's another way - boot up and go to Start - Programs - Sony Notebook Setup... your serial number and Unique Identification Number are in there. Finally, if you still have the Sony Support Agent installed (I uninstalled mine), you can use that, here are instructions: http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C454326

The serial numbers of most laptops are either on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop (sometimes near the Windows Product Key sticker) or, for some units, the sticker is under the battery. If you can find your serial number, write it down in case the sticker comes off or the print fades.
