You can trade your ship "down" to a smaller ship, but only if you were desperate. Larger ships have more cargo space and can pickup more salvage, and in almost every case is preferable to a smaller ship.
You only get 25% of the purchase price of any ship when you trade it in, and that is usually for a larger one.
