Remember that teaching a dog to heel is different from teaching him to walk politely on a leash or not to pull on a leash. It is a very precise bit of training that is probably the hardest thing to teach a dog because it is so abstract.

All Dog Training comes down to reinforcing behavior you want and interrupting and redirecting behavior you don't want. The same is true of heeling. The difficulty with heeling from a training standpoint is that it is a position, not an action. People often confuse that.

In order to reinforce properly, you must have a very clear picture in your mind of where that heel position is. In a formal heel, as done in competition obedience, the dog is six inches away from your left leg and the seam of your pants stays centered more or less on a point halfway between his nose and the leading edge of his shoulder.

Probably the easiest way to start heeling training is to work in a secure area, such as a fenced in yard. Remove the dog's leash and start walking. Eventually your dog will become curious and walk up along side you. That's when you reinforce. Most dogs are motivated by either food or toys. So you can reinforce by offering one of these when he reaches the proper position. Some dogs are motivated by praise, but few people give praise correctly. It must be genuine and emphatic. Most people don't put enough heart into their praise and that's why it fails to motivate.

You don't want the dog to become dependent on constant reinforcement. So once he starts taking a couple of steps with you at a time, stop reinforcing for just one step. Very gradually build up the number of steps needed to score reinforcement.

There are other techniques that can be employed, but the one outlined above will not teach the dog bad habits if you make mistakes, and it will not injure the dog. To learn other techniques for training a dog to heel, enroll in a competition obedience class. Family dog classes won't cover true heeling, just loose-leash walking.

like any other dog...

just walk it around the yard (or on the street if you want) say "heel" then gently jerk it to your side and give it a treat and reward it if you want do that as many times as need to get the dog to do the same thing without the treat its very simple just 1...2...3...!! (unless your dog is stupid)

A Borzoi is like any other dog; perhaps bigger. Walk the dog on your left. As you walk, tell the dog to heel. As you say the command, step to the left and walk in a circle to the left with the dog. (anti clockwise) If the dog does not heel it will run into your leg as you turn. It will not like this. After two days of training this way, every time you say 'heel' the dog will wait in expectation that you are going to turn and walk in front of it. It will then follow you.

What is the difference between Belgian tervuren and German shepherd?

The Belgian Tervuren is more squarely built than the German Shepherd, has a longer coat, is lighter of foot, greater overall speed and has smaller ears. The German Shepherd has a louder bark, longer tail and has a more sloping top line than the Belgian Tervuren. The Belgian Tervuren's coat always has black tipped guard hairs. The German Shepherd tends to shed more frequently. There is also a size difference being that the German Shepherd is slightly larger and longer than the Tervuren. Once you see them side by side, the differences are very apparent and you will never mistake a Terv for a German Shepherd. I believe the Belgian Tervuren is a more serious herder and is probably not as good with children because he tends to chase and nip in order to keep them in line but this is just a general observation. Both are great dogs!

What is a Belgian Tervuren called in Belgium?

In French, it is called "berger de Tervueren". In Dutch, I believe it is "Tervurense herder".

What was the Belgian Tervuren first bred for?

The Belgian Tervuren was named for the Belgian village of Tervuren. It is one of the four varieties of the Belgian Sheepdogs, the Belgian Tervuren, Belgian Groenendael, Belgian Malinois and the less popular Belgian Laekenois, which all share a common foundation. In most countries and breed clubs all four dogs are considered the same breed with different varieties in coat types. All four dogs share a breed standard in all countries accept for the AKC who since 1959 recognizes them as separate breeds and does not recognize one of the four (the Laekenois), whereas the UKC, who is also a U.S. registry does recognize all four varieties as one breed. Versatile and highly intelligent, all four varieties of the Belgian Sheepdog excel at a variety of talents, including but not limited to police work such as, narcotics and bomb detection, protection and schutzhund, search and rescue, also obedience, agility, tracking, herding, sled and cart pulling and as a guide for the blind and assistant to the disabled. These high energy, extremely intelligent dogs need leadership, to be challenged, and well exercised daily and therefore are not for everyone, but can make an excellent family companion with the right owners. The Belgian Malinois was the first of the four sheepdogs to establish type. Until the other four were established in type they were called "Berger Belge a poil court autre que Malinois", which meant "Belgian short-coated Sheepdog who is not the Malinois." Today all four sheepdogs are popular in Belgian. Today the Laekenois and Malinois more often used as working type dogs, than the Belgian Groenendael and Tervuren but all types still make excellent workers.

Is the Belgian Tervuren or the German Shepherd Dog larger?

Pretty much the same build and size, just different face shapes and fur colour/pattern.

What is a Belgian Tervuren?

The Tervuren is a variety of Belgian Shepherd Dog (the others being Mallinois, Groenendael, and Laekenois). They make superb sheepdogs, guide dogs, police dogs, guard dogs, sniffer dogs, and great pets. They are very trusting and loyal, and are willing to live anywhere as long as you give them time to release their boundless energy. In looks, they are similar to German Shepherds but their fur is much longer and they have much sharper features, and slightly larger feet. I personally love them :)

How much does a miniature German Shepherd cost?
