First, make sure they are no distractions around. Such as the TV on, or your child playing with a toy. Put a dog treat in the palm of your hand. Close your hand into a fist. Reach out your hand in front of you. Your dog will most likely sit. Say "Sit" and give him the treat. Repeat. Don't get angry if your dog does learn. Do a little training one day and a little the next. Also some dogs are also not ready to learn. Just be calm. Your dog will learn it when they are ready.
