it's already a routine for him to have a go at your backyard, to break this routine and implement a new one will take time... using a crate is a great idea, but eventually your dog will needs his exercise and walks.. be very patient and consitent with him...

here a few tips:

1. Take time off to housetrain your dog.

2. Start using a crate the day you bring him home.

3. Give your dog at least six bathroom breaks daily.

4. Shower him with praise when he does a good job.

5. Don't punish him for accidents you haven't seen.

1. Put a leash on him

2. Start wlaking slowly, and if he pulls away, tug at the leash for him to come to you.

3. If he is following you perfectly, you can start going a little faster, but not too fast yet.

4. Make sure he doesn't walk in front of you. Dogs are animals that live together. They have wolf blood, and wolves live together in packs with an alpha (leader). Right now you are the alpha and they must follow behind. If they go in front of you, they will feel more dominant over you, and can lead to aggression and other behavior problems. So make sure to tell them a simple "No" or "Behind". If they don't seem to understand the pattern, then tug sharply at the leash and stand in front of them so that they are behind.

5. It is important that you are the pack leader, and not them, because it can have a huge impact from now on when you walk your dog. Once they have understood that you are the leader and that they are not, and they follow you instead on leading you, pick up the pace. Restart the process if they get out hand. Remember: Your Pack Leader. When you walk out your door make sure you're the one that goes first and they follow.

6. When they have completely understood that you are dominant, and you've practiced fast-walking with them, then you're ready to run or jog. If they see something and want to chase it, make sure you know not to say "No, no ,no, no! Stop Cookie! No!" They get excited when you do this, they think you're actually encouraging them. So instead, snap your your fingers and give the leash a small, sharp pull and say soemthign like, "Sh" or somehting that they can remember everytime they do soemthing you don't want them to do. Get their attention by pulling the leash and saying, "No" "Sit" "Down!" "Stay!". If they don't pay any bit of attention, pull at their leahs more and make them sit and tell them a simple "No.", but never, ever be mean or hurt your pet, that can result in aggression. Make sure they know that you're leader. If they lower themselves to the ground, that means they know that you are. Always carry treats so if they do something correctly you can prize them.

7. After they can succesfully walk/run behind you, ignore other animals/stuff happenning around them, follow not lead, and follow commands ("sit" "stay" "no" "stop" "down", etc) then you and your dog can now enjoy running, jogging, or walking. And Remember to give them treats when you come back. It helps improve everything!

Lesson for today: You're pack leader. It can affect everything if you don't give them the physical message. They can become aggressive and dominant if you don't practice this with them. Wolf pack leaders eat first, mate first, do everything first. This should be similar to you and your dog. You should do everything before them so that they get the message.

Can you dog be trained to pull and heel on the lead on separate occasions o will it get confused?

No it won't. If you tell it "go" or "run" that is telling your dog to go ahead of you and run. And when you tell it "heel", you are telling it to stop. But you might want to train off leash before you try on leash.

How old does a dog have to be to go on a lead?

This is not age related. It is training related. They will walk with you on a leash when you train them to do so. No dog is born with immediate knowledge of what a leash is, it is your job to introduce the leash to your dog and tell them all about it.

Should dogs be required to be off leash?

No, dogs should be required to be on a leash when walking. First of all some dogs run off. For example if your dog isn't on a leash when your walking and it runs off and gets hit by a car. Next your dog could run away and not be found. For example we all love our animals and I'm sure no one wants to lose their dog because the dog wasn't wherein a leash .Lastly it is safer for your dog and the ones around it. For example if your dog is aggressive and its not on a leash it could bite someone and you could get sewed and your dog put to sleep .And that is why I think dogs should be required to be on a leash when walking. And plus its the lawBy,Hayley Smith®

When you put a leash on your dog and it doesn't move what should you do?

If your dog finds wearing a leash and/or collar aversive, you will need to train it to wear the leash. Luckily, this is no more difficult than your average dog training exercise. The following process is called counter-conditioning. Identify a reward for which your dog is very motivated: a tasty food treat (in small bites), or even a prized toy or quick game. The goal is to use the leash as a predictor of the reward, so that the dog will eventually be conditioned to respond to the leash in the same manner as the reward. Start small. Put the leash into the dog's view, and reward. Then remove the leash from view. Repeat. When the dog is being rewarded 95% of the time it sees the leash, slightly increase the difficulty. Move the leash closer, and reward if the dog does not shy. When that is successful, move the leash even closer until the only rewarded behavior is touching the leash to the dog. Tips: Do not make the trial more difficult until you are willing to bet $20 the dog will not shy or avoid the leash. Also: Removing the leash and not rewarding is a very important part of this training! It informs the dog that the leash and only the leash is the source of the treats. Continue this training until you can reliably pretend to put a leash on your dog and reward for good behavior. Then you are ready to try actually putting the leash on. Continue to reward for good behavior while the dog is on leash, and try to make leash time rewarding in itself (an exciting walk, or play-time). Once your dog has overcome its anxiety with the leash, very gradually phase out the number and frequency of treats to a more manageable level.

Is there a dog leash law in effect in pennsylvania?

Yes. When in public you must have your dog on a leash. When you are at home you can allow your dog to run around outside (I would recommend containing it somehow even at home such as invisible fence, fence, rope etc.).

Should a puppy be trained on a leash?

If you have the opportunity to train in a safe area, I recommend training your pup to follow you off leash. You will build a strong bond of trust with your pup and it will make leash training easy and simple.Harley HarringtonHarrington's Top Dog Training
