Put the tooth back yourself. If it is replaced within 5 minutes it can replant itself successfully.

  1. Don't put a baby tooth back as it may damage the adult tooth bud in the socket causing deformation or tooth dilaceration.
  2. If it is an adult tooth, gently rinse the tooth with saline/milk/contact lens solution. The patient's saliva can also be used. DO NOT rinse it with water (if you really have to, just for a few seconds).
  3. Hold it by the crown. Don't touch the root or scrub it. The layer of cells on the root surface must not be disturbed.
  4. Success is best if an adult tooth is reinserted in the socket within 5 minutes.
  5. Don't reinsert a tooth if there is a chance the tooth may be inhaled, for example if the person is unconscious.
  6. The tooth may survive if it has been out up to an hour - if it can't be reinserted immediately keep it in milk.
  7. Whether or not it has been reinserted, see a dentist. The dentist may have to splint it.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is an emergency that requires immediate medical attention. If these emergency tips are followed right after a tooth has been knocked out, there is a good chance that the tooth can be saved.

  • The tooth should be picked up by the top of the tooth (crown). The root of the tooth should not be touched.
  • Gently rinse the tooth off with plain water to clean it. Make sure you cover the drain so the tooth doesn't accidentally go down the drain.
  • The tooth should not be scrubbed or any attached tissue should not be removed.
  • Gently place the tooth back into the socket in the correct position, if possible. Gently try to bite down on gauze to hold it in position.
  • If it is not possible to put the tooth back into its socket, place the tooth into a container with milk, warm salt water or your own saliva. Get to a dentist immediately, preferable within one hour.
  • Call your dentist immediately. The longer you wait for implantation, the less likely you will be able to save the tooth.

The tooth may be placed in a clean container of milk, cool water with or without a pinch of salt, or in saliva. If possible, the patient and the tooth should be brought to the dentist within 30 minutes of the tooth loss

If you act quickly, and if the tooth is intact, you can put back the knowcked out tooth (avulsion). If you can't put it back, the tooth can be replaced by a dental implant preferably, or even by a bridge or a partial.

If you knock out a permanent tooth how do you treat this?

If the tooth has just been knocked out and you have the tooth, place it in milk or water and get to your dentist. If you can get to the dentist in time, quite often a tooth can actually be re-implanted. But you have to do it ASAP! If you have the tooth and can't get in touch with your regular dentist, then call any dentist you can get in contact with. There may even be an emergency dentist number in your phone book. But you have to call now!
