Depending on the severity of the injury, splinting may be necessary or it may be counterproductive. For minor to mild sprains, the affected joint should be exercised to the point of mild discomfort to promote recovery. However, severe sprains accompanied by significant pain and swelling may need to be immobilized either by use of a splint or by taping it to an adjacent finger.
There are quite a few treatments, for example, rinse the finger undere a mildy cold tap, plaster it up, but I would recommend soothing creams, like Savlon.
