Typical medical treatment for a UTI is the medication Bactrim (a sulfa drug) or Cipro, an antibiotic. The treatment is usually for 10 days, but if the infection is severe the doctor may prescribe 14 days of treatment. diuretic and anti-inflammatory pill can also help. It is very important to take ALL of the med prescribed by your doctor, even after you begin to feel better.

Urinary tract infections are more common in women and are usually caused by bacteria such as E.coli. Untreated urinary tract infections can cause complications such as cystitis or pyelonephritis. UTI's are usually treated by a 3-7 day common antibiotics such as Bactrim DS, ciprofloxacin, nitrofuratoin. These medications will require a physicians prescription. Your physician may also add another medication called pyridium for the first 2-3 days.

With antibiotics; you should consult your physician if you think you have a urinary tract infection, or UTI.

Women are more prone to UTIs, for reasons that ought to be obvious. A minor preventative for some UTIs would be foods that increase urinary acidity, which would make the bladder less receptive to bacteria. Cranberry juice is often recommended for this purpose. If you don't like the taste of cranberry juice, there are juice blends such as cranberry-apple which taste better and which are just as effective.

Caution: self-prescribing cranberry juice WILL NOT CURE a UTI. At best, it would reduce the likelihood of getting one, or reduce the severity.
