You can help the finger to not pool blood which will increase the pain. As soon you feel the pain squeeze the finger or close it up like a tight fist to keep pressure on the internal bleed. This will keep the blood from pooling in the finger and increasing the pressure and pain. Also, you can immediately place your whole hand under running cold water or ice water to limit the blood flow to the hand. Elevating the hand also help this. Most of the time the breaks occur when you do something that "milks" the finger like lifting a heavy pail with a round handle or wrapping your hand around an object and the blood it squeezed to the tip with no where to go.

How do you treat broken blood vessel?

There is no treatment for breakage of capillaries and other small blood vessels. One must simply wait for healing to occur. Broken capillaries in the skin usually produce a bruise, and it can take several days to two weeks for the blood to be absorbed and for the bruise to fade. One can apply ice, a cold pack or cold water to a fresh injury to minimize swelling and slow down internal bleeding until clotting occurs and the capillaries stop seeping. Breakage of large blood vessels (large veins and arteries) usually requires surgery, as this can be a life-threatening situation.
