That depends how the soldier is injured. I will assume you mean the soldier is freshly injured by a gunshot wound to the thoracic cavity (the chest).
1st. Move the soldier to safety and roll him onto the side of the wound. This will allow the blood to flow out rather than putting pressure on the lungs. If you don't do this, the soldier will die within minutes. Send the nearest person to get a medic.
2nd. Clean the wound with an anti-biotic or a dry sterile cloth. A quick wipe will do. Do not try to put anything in the bullet hole.
3rd. Place a sterile plastic seal over the wound. The inside part of an MRE pouch works perfectly. Apply pressure and tape it in place.
4th. Wrap a sterile cloth around the wound. Keep the patient laying on the side of the wound and get a medic.
DO NOT attempt to give the patient any pain killers you don't know how to administer.
DO NOT allow the patient to eat or drink until given the OK by a medic.
DO NOT let the patient rejoin the fight. He's not all better and he needs help ASAP. If he tries to get up, don't be gentle. Tell him to shut up and quit acting like an idiot. Let him know he's not impressing anyone and he's only going to make his condition worse and endanger the people around him.
