If you want to cut your dogs nails then:

1. file them

2. Use special nail cutters and cut just the very tip because just a few millimeters into the nail there is blood vessels. If you cut it that far the nail will bleed for about 3 days and it can get infected easy. That causes even more problems.

If you are scared to cut the nails, just go to your vet and they can do it.

How can I prevent my dog's nails from being worn down to the quick?

To prevent your dog's nails from being worn down to the quick, regularly trim their nails to keep them at a proper length. Additionally, provide your dog with surfaces like concrete or asphalt for them to walk on, as this can naturally wear down their nails. Regular exercise on these surfaces can help maintain your dog's nail length and prevent them from becoming overgrown.

To trim a Newfoundland's nails, use a high-quality nail clipper or grinder designed for large breeds. Trim the nails every 4-6 weeks, ensuring you only cut the tip to avoid hitting the quick, which can cause bleeding. It's best to do this after a bath when the nails are softer, and always reward your dog with treats to create a positive association. Is there any safe way to anesthetize my Yorkie so I can trim her nails?

The best way to trim nails easily is to teach your dog from when it is a pup. Constantly handle the paws and do trims every 2 weeks or so. Now that she is a bratty adult, it would probably be best to take her to your Veterinarian to have her nails trimmed, no need for sedation. Or have it done by a groomer when she is groomed (the groomer is suppose to trim the nails as part of the overall grooming job). Or have someone hold her for you that knows what they are doing while you trim her nails. Muzzle her if needed with a soft piece of gauze and tie it around her muzzle then back up behind her ears.
