How do you troubleshoot passenger door and window not operating suddenly?

First of all check fuses. It is unclear what you mean by door not operating. As far as the window, it is typically the drive gear that falls apart. I have replace 4 of them (both on two separate LSCs). It is not terribly difficult, but it is a little tricky. The door panel has to be removed and if never done before, it will require two holes to be drilled to access the mounting bolts for the window motor. If you can operate the window from the driver's side, then you need to replace the switch on the passenger's side. If neither side works you need to replace both switches. You buy the switches at any auto parts store. They are fairly cheap. The cover on the window-control panel can be easily removed. If there are no screws, just pry it up.
