Basically if you know how to play a song, play it and if the pitch is low tune it up but if it is high in pitch you do the same thing but you bring it down in pitch.

Tuners are OK but they have their limitations. They always tune to fixed frequency interspacing. Whereas a real musician and a piano tuner knows that to get warmth into a performance a little deviation from the spot frequency is necessary. Tuning will drift over the length of the fretboard, string age can also infuence tuning. The standard tuning for a guitar, in which most music, song chords and TAB is written is as follows, from thickest (6) to thinnest (1): E below lower C, A below lower C, D below middle C, G below middle C, B below middle C, E above middle C. A quick check: press down on the fifth fret of the sixth string and it should sound the same as the open 5th string. The same goes for 5th to fourth, fourth to third and second to first. The relationship of third to second string is the fourth fret on the third string. So String[Fret] looks like this 6[5] = 5[0], 5[5] = 4[0], 4[5] = 3[0], 3[4] = 2[0], 2[5] = 1[0]. Knowing the relationship of the strings is important for fingerpick, lead riffs and classical styles.

AnswerUse an electronic tuner ($15-20), usually it has a needle that will point to the center of the dial to indicate when "in tune" or use an online tuner. There are lots of online tuners, the one I use is at http://www.get-tuned.com/guitar_tuner.php

Just match the sound of the string to the sound of the pitch you hear for each string. After tuning all stif you have rings, go back and check all of them again because tuning one string slightly changes the others! It doesn't take long after you get the hang of it. And there is nothing worse than playing out of tune, so take time to learn this important part of guitar playing.

Usually, to tune a guitar, at the top of the neck of the guitar there will be little twist knobs known as machine heads. Twist them one way for a tighter, higher sounding string, and vice versa, until you get the proper note for each string. To overcome mechanical wear in the mechanism, always tune up to the note. If you go past (sharp), detune low and try again.

Answer

Play the lower string in fret 5 to tune the next string down. Example: if you are tuning the A string play the low E string in the 5th fret and match the A string with the 5th fret E string's pitch. Except when you tune the B string you use the 4th fret G string's pitch.

Answer

If you have an electric tuner it will realy help. You can pick them up from any of your local good music stores. They are one of the basic materials that are very useful and are a lot easier than tuning manualy.

If you have access to the internet when ever you need to tune,, and you cant afford to buy a electronic tuner, fork tuner... then YouTube is a good subsitute. Type in " standard Guitar tuner" or "drop D Guitar tuner " in search bar and you are all set

If you have a piano, the thickest E is the 2nd E to the Middle C. The A next to it is 3 white keys to the right, D 3 to the right, G 3 to the right, B 3 to the right, and the skinny E is 2 notes from Middle C. Keep adjusting your strings until the strings sound like the piano. (The piano has to be in tune!)
if you have a guitar tuner you should select the string on the tuner adjust the corresponding peg a strum until the tuner and guitar's pitches sound alike.

The standard tuning is E (Lowest sounding string) - A - D - G (Highest sounding string.)

You can tune your Bass Guitar by twisting the pegs. Twisting them Anti-Clockwise will tighten the strings, hence making it have a higher pitch. Twisting the pegs Clockwise will loosen the string, making it have a lower pitch.

You can tune an Electric Guitar in many ways. These include:- * Using an electronic tuner.(E.g Chromatic) * Pitch pipes * Sometimes they maybe built into FX pedals, or amplifiers. * Ask a member of staff in a music shop to tune it for you, if you are a first timer.

You mean which notes to tune to or how to physically tension the strings to get those notes?

Commonly accepted today the notes to tune to are EBGDAE going from the 1st, or highest, string down to the 6th, or lowest string.

The highest E string is the E below the International standard A=440Hz.

So A440 is found at the fifth fret on String 1, the high E string.

A440 is the A in the centre of the piano keyboard. The A in the fourth octave.

Hence we can see the guitar sounds almost entirely within the range to the left of the piano keyboard with only high C,D,E in the fourth octave.

However the guitar notes are written one octave above their sound.

There are numerous methods of setting these string tunings.

All methods should work from a fixed and accurate source. Such as a tuning fork or a pitch pipe or a digital tuner for portable sources - or at home perhaps a piano known to be in tune or some other instrument.

Some musicians, of course, may have perfect pitch to the level where they can set A440 without reference to any guide whatever.

A common method to tune the guitar:

Set A440 on the 1st string by fretting at the 5th fret and tuning the string until it sounds identical with the A440 source.

Then stop the 2nd string at its 5th fret and tune it until it is identical with the first string.

Then the 3rd string at the 4th fret until it is identical with the 2nd string.

Then the 4th string at the 5th until identical with 3rd.

Then 5th at 5th until identical with 4th

Then 6th at 5th until identical with 5th.

'Identical' means at the same frequency, the same pitch. The sounds will not be identical, especially not between the guitar and some other source, not a guitar, like a piano or a pitch pipe.

This is because of the different sounds of instruments which gives us much fo the colour and beauty of music, of course.

It may take some time to adjust the ear to understand when different 'sounding' instruments are making the same note.

On the guitar itself 'beat' frequencies can help with learning to recognise the in tune status.

Pluck both strings together and careful sensitive observation will detect a 'beat' frequency when the strings are nearly in tune but not quite.

And that beat frequency will change as the strings get closer and closer together.

So if they are 20Hz apart you'll get a 'throbbing' or a 'beat' at 20Hz, 20 cycles per second, under your fingers, in your ears.

And as you tighten or slacken to bring them together that frequency will slow down as you approach 'in tune' or speed up as you wander away from it.

This can be a big help for the beginner who sometimes has difficulty in even detecting which way to tension the string - tighten or slacken.
