Maybe your key is stuck or has something stuck underneath it. Try tapping it to loosen it, or if all else fails, pop the key out (if you think you can pop it back in, that is) and clean under it.

The external display has nothing to do with it :). You have numlock turned on, turn it off by either pressing function (fn) + numlock or just the numlock key, it depends on try way your computers configured. Usually if your function key is the same colour as the numlock text, you need to do the first key sequence, if not, just try the other :)
