For a Zune, it's to hold down the play button until the screen comes up with a Zune logo. As for the Zune HD I'm not sure, but I suspect it's the same thing of pressing a button. If this doesn't work check the hold button, and if it's on turn it off. If that's not the problem, try charging it. Chances are then that it's so dead it can't muster the energy to show the "low battery" symbol.
take of the lock on the top of the zune. to turn off hold down play button for five seconds (until screen goes black) then put on the lock.
on your zune go to settings and click screen lock. set a screen lock (for quickness set it as 2111) turn of your zune then turn it back on. get the screen lock WRONG (type in 1111) if you get it wrong three or four times a message will come up saying "would you like to reset your zune"

No you can plug it in to charge anytime. The screen may turn on but you can just let it be.
go to the zune website to activate them with the zune program
Whatever songs that you get when you have the zune pass you keep.
Check if you turned the zune on. When this happen to me, this is what I did: Plug your Zune in to the computer. Exit out of the Zune marketplace once it pops up. Your Zune should be charging.

just let it sit and run out of battery, then turn it back on after you've charged it up
