First, that's a 'P' trap (because of it's shape, - it doesn't trap peas ). To unclog it you undo both of the large nuts you will see on each side of the lower bend. Have a small bucket or container handy to put under it to catch overflow. Easiest to do it with a medium pipe wrench, an auto oil filter wrench or large 'channel lock' pliers.
When I need to clean one I take it out into the yard and clean with garden hose. There is no effective way of cleaning it 'in situ'.

Actually, the pea trap is not designed to catch things you mistakenly drop down the drain. All drains lead to a sewer or septic system. The pea trap is designed to hold a small amount of water to block all those lovely smells from coming back into the house as the drain acts as direct conduit to the funk.

Remove the trap and clean it out. If it is all PVC and glue jointed, cut the pipe above and below the trap, clean it out and glue it back together with couplings.

Disconnect and remove p-trap from under fixture. Clean out clog in p-trap and re-install.
Use a piece of window screen put pea gravel on it and wash with a garden hose till it is clean. good cleaning.
