No, you can use an avatar which isn't a picture of yourself.
It is called an Avi (avatar) or DP (display picture.)
It depends if you are using an app or not on your mobile. If you are simply using 'Twitter Mobile' then avatars aren't supported and won't appear. Most apps have this function though and your avatar should be visible.
