The usual way is to drag the application to the trash. Some applications will have external preference files (think of it as leaving an entry in the registry). Leaving them there is no problem, and many people do it all the time. But if you really want to get rid of them, you can get an application like AppCleaner. With AppCleaner, you start the AppCleaner program, then drag the application you want to uninstall onto AppCleaner. It will show you a list of the files it thinks should be deleted. There will normally be 2 or 3, the first being the application itself. Press delete to remove the checked files. Some applications will come with an uninstall program to make this easier (as if it could possibly get any easier).
