An is peculiar because it is A for those words that start with a vowel sound. An orange, an apple, or an underling. It denotes a single item just like A.

"I want an orange and I want an underling to bring it to me."

"An" is usually put it a sentence to tell you the noun next to it is singular. If the noun starts with a vowel sound, you use "an" and if not you use "a."
