Basically, a Kensington lock for a laptop (or any other device) is a reinforced steel cable that's anchored to an immovable object (such as a filing cabinet or desk). The other end is inserted into the slot on the equipment, and locked via a key or combination lock. The only way to remove the lock is to use the appropriate key, or code.
