Every farmer has to answer this for him/herself. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) should always be considered when the crop is being planned. Contact-kill pesticides should never be applied until the number of pests has risen to a level where economic damage is occurring. Once the number of pests has risen to an unacceptable level, only approved pesticides should be applied by a trained, licensed operator.

By reading, understanding, and carefully followingthe instructions printed on the pesticide label. It is always a violation of US federal law to use any pesticide in any manner inconsistent with its label.

The label contains vital information on application methods, pests controlled, applicator safety epuipment, cautions which must be followed for the protection of the environment, and crops which may be treated with that particular pesticide.

Pesticides are sprayed on crops for a number of reasons.

  • To suppress plants which compete with the crop, reducing yield (herbicides)
  • To suppress organisms which eat, suck on, or chew on the crop, causing injury (insecticides, rodenticides, miticides, etc.)
  • To prevent or suppress disease (fungicides, bactericides, etc.)
  • To change the growth patterns of the crop in some way (growth regulators, hormones, etc.)

Pesticides should always be considered the last resort in a well-planned program of Integrated Pest Management.
