If you are a free Basic member, you can not do it, no matter what.
BUT, if you are a paid member, put a moshling in your house, then go to a random place on the map (but NOT puzzle palace, moshling garden, fun park, volcano, home, or dress up room), and you should see a moshling next to/below your monster.

If you are a paid member you go to the moshi monster zoo and pick a moshling. When it appears on the moshlings in your room the first one is the one you will walk when you go outside your house. Otherwise it will stay in your house.
