As far as I know the Nike Free 3.0 trainers have been discontinued for men. They still sell women nike free 3.0 free trainers. They are currently at 5.0 for nike frees though.
Overall, it takes about 5-8 years for Nike products to go from design to exit from the market. But for different series and types of products, their life cycles will also be different.
When it comes to the barefoot running experience, Nike's Free Run's tend to have the highest review ratings. If you know you're going to use them, I would recommend the Nike Free Run 3, as opposed to NFR 2. However, they are quite expensive considering how less material is in them.
