Alot of people say that Waterbending is impossible but its not. A few people have been able to harness the power of hydrokinetics. Its not all spiritual, although monks and nomads have claimed their spirits have been cleansed and that they can manipuate different elements. The power of hydrokinetics or "waterbending" as they call it in Avatar is an extremley rare ability for a human to posses (unlike in Avatar where over half of the Northern Water Tribe can waterbend). Few people have said they can manipulate water ande even fewer have proved it. The only person that has actually Waterbent was an old lady that live in the mountain springs of China called Xi Main has made a thin stream of water float up from the surface and touch her fingers, However she died 10 years ago. Nobody has ever found the secret to use hydrokinetic powers so the most feasable thing to do is go by the Avatar route. Learn Ti Chi, which is essential for all waterbenders. Try to reach spiritual awareness, and if you are by chance one of the luckiest people on Earth. Find someone that can use hydrokinetic powers or a 'Waterbending Master' and she if you can waterbend. *Note: The most accomplished Waterbender, Xi Main could only lift water three centimetres high. So it is very unlikley, even if you do have the power to use hydrokinetics to attack people with water.

Actually, water bending is real. In fact, I know how to, but it is a strange thing. You have to actually have to be born with that talent, and I was! So if you were not born with the natural talent to bend water then i guess you werent meant to bend, sorry.

Each style has its own strengths and weaknesses. Fire bending and water bending both draw their powers from the sun and moon respectively. Airbending is stronger in places where wind is more prevelant which is why all 4 of the temples where shown either on mountains or in a valley (the western air temple). Earth bending draws strength obvisouly where there is earth to bend. But the strength of the four types of bending depends on who the bender is.

They made a cave under a mountain that is lit with crystals when dark so they could find each other and be left at peace. Water-bending was learned from watching the Moon bend waves in the ocean. A fifth bending also exists (*spoiler*) which is bending-bending (or spirit-bending) and is known only by Aang and Lion Turtles. Aang having learned it from a Lion Turtle. I do not know why everyone (except the Avatar) can only bend their native element. Or why only some people are benders. I do know that ALL air nomads were air benders. It SEEMS as though anyone should be able to learn to bend any element, but it does not work that way. Though the implication seems to be that bending has a genetic component, rather than a national one (especially since Air nomads are so spread-out).
