At least in Mexico we call first-year sudents: "Novatos", which literally means novices... so we usually say "Novatada"... for a fresher party. "Novatada" can be the welcome party... but it can also mean the welcome prank that greater students make to freshers on their first day at school.
A fresher party or party for freshman might be thrown by upper class of students or by the faculty. This offers new students a chance to thank the host of the party for making them feel welcome.
