In an emergency and for a short period of time you can single phase a three phase motor but the motor will be loud, have terrible power characteristics and depending upon the use will burn up rather quickly. You should never try to run this in other than a life threatening emergency situation, the motors are not designed for it. Normally you don't.

A three phase motor will not start on single phase. If the motor was started on three phase and loses a phase, it will stay running at a lower percentage of efficiency. Now a days the motor protection will not let a three phase motor run in a single phasing condition. All three phase legs of the motor are monitored and in a single phase condition the other two legs of the motor draw a higher current. This higher current is sensed by the motor's overload heaters in the motor's contactor and take the motor off line by opening the motor contactor.

Now to the question, any two legs of a three phase system in electrical terms is known as single phase. As long as the three phase voltage matches the voltage needed in the single phase power diagram it can be connected to operate single phase equipment.

What are the procedures for the connection of single and 3 phase circuits?

Single phase connection has 1 phase wire and a neutral wire. Another wire for protective earth. In three phase system, motor can be connected in star or delta. Most AC induction motors are in Delta. Power distribution system is generally 3 phase 4 wire. Transmission system is 3 phase high voltage. Industry uses 3 phase system, where as 1 phase is for domestic, commercial applications. Both 1 and 3 phase system has a frequency. It is either 50 Hz or 60 Hz, depending upon the country or region.

Is there any difference in the power consumption by a same rating motor in 1 phase or in 3 phase?

The power consumption is the same in both cases. For a high-power motor it is more efficient to feed a 3-phase motor because the amount of power wasted in the wiring that feeds the motor is less, assuming the same size of wire.

How do you hook up a 3 phase water heater to a 3 wires 1 white 1 black 1 bare copper ground?

In order to answer your question, firstly, we have to accurately establish your supply. Is it 2 phase or 2 wire?2 phase is two active conductors, i.e. 2 live wires with reference to neutral or ground2 wire is single phase, an active and a neutral conductor.2 phase supply is uncommon.Single phase (2 wire) is the more common supply and for installations with large loads three phase, or, more appropriately 3 phase and neutral (4 wire) is used. Please confirm your supply so that a detailed answer can be provided.

What are some advantages of 3-phase power over 1-phase power?

There are several advantages of 3-phase power over single phase power. First, with 3-phase power, more power can be transferred with the same amount of wire (meaning the amount of copper used in all of the conductors transferring that power) as with single or 2-phase power. Also, power is transferred more "evenly" with 3-phase power because the "next peak" is closer than it is with single and 2-phase power. The 3-phase motors run more smoothly than those run on fewer phases. Also, there are motor design considerations (one being control of the direction of rotation) regarding the motor that make 3-phase power more attractive. Use the link to the Wikipedia article on 3-phase power and skim it. It isn't long and it is quite readable.

Do televisions use single-phase or 3-phase power?

Answer 1: TV's use single-phase power. Answer 2: TV's use single phase power of 220 or 110 volts ac power depending on what part of the world you live in.

Why neutral wire current is more in 1-phase than the 3-phase?

On a typical house plug, there are three wires - the positive, neutral, and ground. Ideally, the positive and neutral wires carry the current (the neutral wire provides the return path for the current from the positive wire), and the ground wire carries no current. In a three phase system, you have three phase voltages of the same magnitude (ideally), but the three phase voltages are out of phase with each other by 120 degrees - meaning one is at 0 degrees, one is at 120 degrees, and one is at -120 degrees if you looked at them on an oscilloscope, and referenced to one phase. If you take (1 at an angle of 0 degrees) + (1 at an angle of 120 degrees) + (1 at an angle of -120 degrees), you will get zero. Thus the return path in three phase power is shared between the three phases, and the neutral wire in a 4 wire, three phase system is equivalent to the ground wire connected to your wall plug. The ground wire will only carry current when the "vector sum of the phase voltages does not equal zero" (meaning the simple equation at the beginning of this paragraph does not sum to zero - whatever it sums to is what is flowing in the neutral).

Just replace the cord. Your manual has instructions.

How power is flowing when voltage and phase angle is maintained same?

Assume you are saying that the current and voltage are in phase and you want to know how power is affected. When Voltage and Current are in phase the Power Factor is 1 and you have maximum power being applied. When Voltage and Current are not in phase, Power Factor decreases from 1 toward zero.
