WLAN routers are very cheap today, it would be much easier to make up a real WLAN network ... Nevertheless: Give both PCs a WLAN device (USB or a card or something) and set these devices to "ad hoc" mode. This mode connects only 2 devices and works like a crossed twisted pair cable. It is not really common to do so. I really suggest a simple access point, and then configure the two PCs the join the WLAN on that access point. This concept allows more systems to join the network and you have a better security (WEP, WPA and MAC filtering etc.).

Personal Computer?
Connect it for what? You could use 2 patch cables and a switch, a cross-over cable, firewire, you could connect wirelessly over a network, you could connect over a lan on a network. You could tie the two computers together with a rope or use super sticky glue. I'm not sure what you are asking.
Your computer will have a section call network connections, this folder will offer you a step by step for connecting these two computers.
Buying a wireless card depends on if your wanting to use the laptop while not near the desktop. You can buy network cables to connect the two computers as well.
