In 1860 there were no farm workers. Family did the work and neighbors helped each other. Often sons were used to work another farm.

You can earn coins by going to your neighbors and tending their farms, and going to the market and try and get hired to work on someone else's farm by harvesting their crops. Also, when you are on the farm town application, in the top corner there are some options like Play, Send, Neighbors, etc, and there is one in red that says "earn coins." You can try doing some of the things that they have until that button if you click on it.
How do you hire people to work in your facilities in farm town?
First, you must be in a facility you want others to work in. To do that, click .Show Facility Details. for that facility. Then click the 'What's Pending' tab. If you have items that are pending, then there should be a button in the upper left corner that says 'Produce Faster'. Click that, and it will bring up a menu to post a link to your home page asking others to help at your farm. It will be a pop up, and will be hidden if you are full screen in Farm Town.

Yes, farm upgrades must be done in sequence in FarmVille. You can't upgrade from a Starter Farm (12x12) to a Plantation (20x20). You have to go through all the upgrades in sequence. The neighbors might say they have prior commitments, are dealing with their own farm work, or are physically unable to help the farmer.
