First of all you need some data about your car telling how quickly it can slow down. So you can either find out the deceleration data of your car, or just measure how much time it takes to stop from a certain speed, which would be easier.

Lest say, travel at 30MPH, which is 13.4 meters per second. slam the brakes on and time how long it takes to stop.

With this data, we can work out the mean deceleration of your car in ms-2 by dividing 13.4 by however long it takes you to stop. lets say it takes 2 seconds, 13.4 / 2 = 6.7 so our deceleration is 6.7ms-2

We can then use a 'SUVAT' equation, namely s=ut+1/2at2 where:

u= Initial velocity (13.4 ms or your speed)

t= time (2 seconds or whatever your one is)

a= acceleration (-6.7)

s= displacement (distance)

so sub in (remember our acceleration is minus because we are slowing down): S=13.4*2+0.5*-6.7*(2*2)

This gives us 26.8+(-13.4) = 26.8-13.4 = 13.4 Meters

The Highway agency braking distance value for 30MPH is 14 meters, so that's pretty close.

So to do it yourself, convert your speed to meters per second, measure how long it takes to stop and sub your data into the above equations.

Happy calculating!

Why is the braking distance longer when the car is travelling at a higher speed?

Inertia.

What is braking distance composed of?

Braking distance is usually measured by how fast you can stop at 60mph, 60-0, the make of a car is the factor of the stopping distance, each car varies. Your car can have disc brakes or drum brakes or both. Disc brakes are more effective than drum brakes. But braking distance is usually showed by how many feet it takes to stop from 60mph

What things can affect braking distance?

Things that affect braking distance consist of the following factors: * speed at which you're travelling * weight of the car * road conditions * braking efficiency * friction between the road surface and your tires Things that affect braking distance consist of the following factors: * speed at which you're travelling * weight of the car * road conditions * braking efficiency * friction between the road surface and your tires

A study was done to find if the different tire treads affect the braking distance of a car what is the independent variable?

The type of tread is the independent variable and the braking distance is the dependent variable.

Braking distance between a motorcycle and car?

Ultimate braking distance is similar for a car and motorcycle, but it requires a lot of skill to do it on a motorcycle. Comparing an average motorcycle to an average car driver, the car will stop faster. (whoever said that braking on a motorbike is an idiot i have a motor bike and am very good on it and ever since i got my bike i have been able to break its simple!!! just like on a normal bike)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the relationship between a car's mass and its stopping distance?

The greater the mass of the car and its occupants the longer the stopping distance that is required for the vehicle. Stopping distance is calculated by taking into account car mass and reaction time in braking

What effects the distance a car takes to stop?

The speed; the quality of the braking system; the mass of the car; the time it takes the driver to notice a danger. The speed is especially important; other things being equal, braking distance is proportional to the square of the distance. That means that at twice the speed, the car will move 4 times as far while it brakes.

How do you calculate brake efficiency of a car?

estimates the distance a car travel at 100 km/h during your reaction time in braking

What is the rule of thumb on car braking distance?

The general rule of thumb is that you should be able to see the tires of the car in front of you touching the pavement.

How are thinking distance and braking distance linked?

When you will observe the road far ahead of the front end of your car and keep proper distance between other cars, then you will have enough time for thinking and enough space for braking. But when intense situation happens, then the thinking and braking are solidified in one desperate move: to avoid a collision.

How long does it take a car traveling 40 mph to come to a complete stop?

For a car with good brakes and a length of 4m, a dry road with a driver with average reaction time it will take approximately 36m/118 feet/nine car lengths for it to stop. This can be divided up into two sections the thinking distance/reaction distance of 12m and a braking distance of 24m. Like the previous answer stated the braking distance can be changed depending on the road surface type and weather conditions or if the car is fitted with an Anti-lock Braking System Thinking distance can be increased by drinking alcohol or taking some types of drugs.

What does braking distance mean?

Braking distance refers to the distance a vehicle will travel from the point when its brakes are fully applied to when it comes to a complete stop.
