Research

Be sure to do research. Get facts and stats. Look at both sides of the issue before you establish your opinion. Look for arguments from a variety of sources. Do not rely exclusively on any one medium. Professional journals are some of the best.

Writing
Organize your essay in a way that makes sense. Read your essay to yourself aloud. If it sounds right to your ear, it is probably right. Organization has a flow to it, and your essay should flow. Point should follow point. As you introduce your arguments in the first paragraph, discuss them in the same order in the paragrpahs after.

Revising
Lose the first person language. Your essay is you speaking. It is redundant to say, "I am going to tell you what I think and this is it." Using the first person in an essay is doing exactly that. So just say what you have to say in direct statements. Read over your essay several times outloud to make sure it sounds right. Check spelling, grammar, and punctuation last. These things are not trivial; if you can't use proper grammar, people will be less likely to trust what you're saying, but you need to be certain your paper is contructed as it should be. To make sure you caught all those little mistakes, it helps if you have someone else read it, and it helps you if the mechanical parts of your writing is the last act you perform on your paper.

Final Copy
Make a nice, clean final copy. It helps if you have it typed up nicely. Picking a standard block font and maybe adding some graphics can help the appeal. Do not go overboard on the graphics though. Use only what supports your work, and cite it.

Proof read it several times. Stick to your topic. Keep it simple. Follow the rules or guidelines for the essay. Give support to your ideas.

An essay is a long piece of writing and it is written in paragraphs

An essay consists of three major parts:

  • the introduction
  • the main body
  • the conclusion

The introduction and the conclusion, although very important, are often relatively short. The bulk of an essay, both in form and substance, is contained in the main body.

The introduction is intended to lead the reader into the topic and clarify what the essay will specifically deal with. It usually consists of one paragraph, but this depends on the length of the essay and the amount of background information the context requires. The introduction will contain a key sentence (or, if necessary, more than one).

The main body deals with the major ideas that support the the statement. Each main idea is presented in a separate paragraph and developed with supporting ideas in the form of explanations, definitions, or similar, and illustrated with examples where appropriate or necessary.

The conclusion brings the reader back to the purpose of the essay and draws all the points together before making a final comment on the result of the discussion/argument. Often this final comment will point towards some consequence the discussion may have for the future or make some observation about what the discussion has revealed on a general level.

Ultimately an essay will show a progression from a general level (in the introduction) down to the specific (the statement and body) and back up to the general level again(conclusion). The reader will be expecting this so it gives your essay a sense of completion.

If you're writing a 5 paragraph essay, you want to have an introduction, 3 body paragraphs and then your conclusion.

Your intro should start with an attention grabber (question, joke etc.) Slowly build up towards your thesis, which should be at the end.

Your body paragraphs each should have a main point, communicated in the first sentence, called a topic sentence. You topic sentences should tie back to you thesis. the next 4ish sentences of the body paragraph should support the topic sentence. Then, you should have a conclusion sentence, which wraps up the paragraph and/or is a transition to the next paragraph.

Your conclusion should first restate the thesis, then wrap up your essay. Ending with something dramatic like an attention grabber is helpful.

Write sentences the way you speak - just pretend you are telling this to a friend, and write down what you would say. What would you tell them about this topic? Look up some facts! How would you explain the topic to your friend? What does the topic mean to you?

If you just start writing, you will be through with your assignment before you know it!

Well first pre-write. Pre-writing is using a thinking map to jot down all of your ideas and thoughts. Make a rough draft to get an idea what to write about. BE CREATIVE! Nothing is worse than a boring essay. Make sure that the essay will entertain all readers. Be humorous. Its always nice to laugh when reading an essay every now and then. Make sure that you also have factual statements. Inform the reader. Design a thesis statement that is strong and easy to write about. More is less, which means don't go on and on and on. If you don't have any more ideas than finish your essay off with a conclusion. If it is a research paper then do lots of research about your topic. KEEP IT CREATIVE AND SIMPLE!
