Tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union during World War II contributed to the start of the Cold War.
Let's say your topic is How soldiers of World War II survived the deprivations of the battlefield. You have a strong topic sentence and a point you are making about their excellent training. But you then drift into making an opinion statement, like, I really like those WWII canteens; I bet they kept the water cold. That stray opinion doesn't fit and breaks the unity of the main idea.
"When most people hear the word 'desert' they think of heat but that is not necessarily so."
The A-Bomb created the cold war.
First, you start off with a topic sentence. Then, you give supporting details. A paragraph consists of 5-7 sentences. Always end in, "In conclusion..." For example: My favorite TV show is Cold Case. I love this show because the LAPD solves important murder cases and brings justice to citizens. I enjoy watching this show because it is extremely unpredictable. For instance, the murderer always ends up being the person whom you least expected it to be, which adds a huge twist to the entire plot. In conclusion, Cold Case is a magnificent TV show.
The American people characterizes the role of America's possession of the atomic bomb in the origins of the Cold War.

Cold
The adjective in the sentence "This is a cold day in March" is "cold".
Yes. The preopistion in that sentence is 'for' and the object of the preposition(what it is too cold for) is swimming.
Baudelaire Thank you for supplying this name for the author of a paragraph about "malaise". More than 50 years ago, I saw the essay in a book on English style, demonstrating how a long sentence can be so well constructed that it may serve as a whole long paragraph. By the time you finish reading the paragraph, you don't feel so good (or is it well?). I would like to use that paragraph as a description in a new medical book on the common cold. Providing the exact reference would be deeply appreciated as was the citation of Baudelaire. Ray Phillips
Good topic would be 1) The causes for the current economic situation 2) Government influence on the economy 3) Traditional/historical American economic trends Hope these help.
