Since similes are comparisons and a form of metaphors you can make it more of a statement then a comparison... ie:
She's like a bull in a china shop (simile)
She's a bull in a china shop (metaphor)
The trick is that you need to always use "like" or "as" in your similes.
ex: their dog attacked me LIKE a hungry lion.
metaphors are written without "like" or "as"
ex: he is a snake.

An extended simile, also known as an epic simile, is a comparison that extends beyond the normal comparison. Milton uses them often to describe grand ideas because he wanted to write an epic poem.
