In this case, you would add 嗎 at the end of your sentence to indicate you are asking a question. In Pinyin, 嗎 can be read as "ma". For example, if someone asks you 你是中國人嗎, or Ni shi zhongguoren ma?(are you chinese?--the only question I could think of at the moment), the "ma" would indicate you are asking a question and is used in both speaking and writing(I'm pretty sure).
