You want to put a lot of open ended questions. Also, having an ending that could have two possible choices. For example, The Lady or the Tiger by Frank Stockton the ending could lead to either of the doors, and that makes you think about which one the princess led her lover to, the one with the maiden, or the one with the tiger.
