You can remove collections from you credit report by disputing them to the credit bureaus. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, consumers can dispute any listing they believe to be erroneous or inaccurate. The credit bureaus have 30 days to verify any disputed account or it must be removed from your credit report.

A collection agency CANNOT report anything on a persons credit report. Only a debtor can. If a collection agency has no absolute proof that you actually owe the debt, they cannot make any information public. Contact the collection agency and send send them a letter demanding that they validate the debt. They have to provide you with all of the particulars of the debt. Who the original debtor is, their licenses, the contract that they have with the original debtor stating that they ,in fact , can attempt to collect the debt and anything that will prove that you actually are owing. You can download a sample online,,,just Google )debt validation letter sample". Send it Registered Return Receipt Requested. When you get the receipt back, keep it for 30 days. If the collection agency has not provided ALL of the information requested. Write to them again, ask them to remove the negative report and tell them that you will sue them for defamation of character...which is a viable suit against them. IF it is not removed with 30 days, contact a lawyer, don't worry, the lawyer will have to be paid by the Collection Agency not you and you can receive an award of $1000.

Collection agencies have NO FINANCIAL power over anyone.

Contact the credit bureau where the false information has been filed ie: Experian, TransUnion, ect. If you dispute the debt with them and the creditor can not prove its your debt they have to remove the debt from your report.

There are a few steps that you can take in order for this collection account to be removed permentatly. You can dispute this item with the bureaus, check to see if this account is verifiable, incomplete, or simply not your account. If either of these cases apply to you then you can simply write a letter of explanantion to each bureau that is reporting this account stating either of these facts. Make sure that in the letter you provide the account name, account number, the amount owed, and your personal information: Full name, home address, social security number, and date of birth. When you mail this letter you need to have the following items:

A copy of your credit report (with the disputed item highlighted)

A copy of your drivers license

A copy of your social security number

A copy of your dispute letter

Copies of two different utility bills that have your most recent home address (For verification purposes)

You have a 50% chance of having these items removed permenatly; especially if these accounts are older acccounts. You as a consumer have the legal right to dispute items on your credit report until the cows come home. Now if this does not apply to you, and your collection account is not only a recent account, but it does belong to you then I would consider you making a settlement offer with the collection agency. You can settle anywhere from .10 cents on the dollar, or 30 % of the balance owed. Make sure that if when you contact the collection agency that you have the finances to make a settlement payment that day. Before you make a payment get the agreement in writing (have them fax it to your personal fax number, or your local Ups/Staples store)

Once you receive the letter is when you will call them back and make that payment, also request that they mail you a letter stating that is account was "Settled in Full", not a partial settlement. Ask them to update this information with all three bureaus (this is not always going to happen, but you should always ask). Keep in mind that once you make a payment on an account you will have this on your report for at least seven years from the "Date of Last Payment or Date of Last Activity". This is when your collection account can be removed permenatly. You will have to keep records of this and send a letter to the burueaus stating this fact, and they will have to remove this account from your credit report. Also, look online and Google "Statue of Limitation for each state" You can also check to see if your SOL has expired with this collection account. This is another way you can get an item removed from your credit report.

Find a lawyer in a different city that has the same first name as you. For instance, if your name is Wally, then find a lawyer somewhere named Wally or Walter. Then when the collection agency calls and asks for you, say that you are Wally's roommate and Wally moved out of your apartment because he found work in another city. When Mr. Collector asks if you know Wally's new phone number, you say you don't but you DO have his work number at his new job. Then give the lawyers number. That should put a stop to the collector calling your line. It worked for me, twice.

There are some collection companies that will agree to what is termed as a pay for deletion. You pay in full or make a settlement and they will delete the account from reporting at the credit bureaus. Most collection companies won't.

To get the account deleted from the credit bureaus you need to use the consumer credit laws to get the results you want. Simply the law states (FCRA - Fair Credit Reporting Act) that nothing can stay on your credit report if it is inaccurate, incomplete, obsolete, or can not be verified. This gives you the power to challenge how the account is reporting. Unfortunately, not many people do this well.

In addition, your power increases if a collection agency violates the FDCPA - the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. You may be able to use that as a wedge.

If you are unsure how to do all this you might want to leave it to the experts at a credit repair company. Do your homework first. What training have they had, do they do this full time, are they recognized in their industry. A good starting point is NACSO - the credit repair industry's trade association.

How do you remove collections from credit report?

Good question. There are a few tactics to remove collections from your credit report; First, is the debt paid off? If so, the option I would suggest is to write a dispute letter to that specific credit bureau. If the debt has not been paid yet, typically, you can negotiate with the creditor to remove the collection account from your credit report if you pay the debt (WARNING!!! make sure this is stated in writing before you send any money).

Can a collection ruin your credit report?

Yes a collection can ruin your credit report. Collections are similar to charge offs and will lower your score significantly all depending on the age of the collections and the amount owed. You can remove a collection by disputing it to the credit bureaus or by contacting the original creditor and working out a deal. Either way works well. You might have to hire a credit repair service if you decide to dispute it or have the money to settle the collection if you contact the creditor directly.
