There are two ways, replace the oil pan gasket or replace the oil pan. From my experience it is WAY easier and better to just replace the whole oil pan. A gasket will run you $50 and a new oil pan will cost $200 (from Mazda). The gasket will probably leak again but the new oil pan has a redesigned integral gasket that should last. Plus a new oil pan will be clean, comes with all the hardware and will save you lots of time. Here is a crib sheet of what to do. Remove the large cross brace that runs under the exhaust system. Remove one section of exhaust (the one blocking your view of the oil pan). Remove the oil pan. Reverse. First time I did it, it took 3 hrs. Now it takes less than an hour. Seriously, I don't like high priced Mazda parts but this is an exception, you won't be disappointed.
1. Be Careful. 2. Remove old oilpan. 3. While you are there replace the oil pump and wire out your oil holes. 4. Replace with new oilpan. The oilpan does not need to be torqued to it's limit - just enough so it doesn't leak. Gasket sealer only makes things worse. If your oilpan is getting pressurized you have other problems. 1. Replace the cam seal.
