Although there were a number of fasteners available before 1923 (The Automatic Continuous Clothing Closure with a patent in 1851, a device from the Universal Fastener Co in 1893, The Separable Fastener in 1917) The Zipper came from B F Goodrich in 1923 and was used on rubber boots and tobacco pouches. It was referred to as the 'Zipper' for no particular reason, and the name stuck. But some people want to know how zippers became also known as flies.
