Alice is stuck in the hall of doors, is quite upset and is over nine feet tall as a result of eating the cake she found under the table. She begins to cry. Owing to her huge size this produces a large volume of tears which creates a pool. The White Rabbit runs by and is so startled by the sight of the giant Alice that he drops his gloves and fan. It is hot in the hall so Alice uses the fan to cool herself, which causes her to shrink to the size of a mouse. She then slips and falls into the pool of tears which, relative to her new size, is about as big as a small lake.
And so she ends up swimming in her own tears.
