Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

This verse tell us that God's written word has power and will affect us. God's word will afect us as we read it and after we read it. God's word discerns us, judges us as we live our lives. For example a Christian may be treating somebody unkindly the Holy Spirit could bring to mind the words "love your neighbour as yourself" it is up to the Christian to respond to that prompting in a positive way.
