When you do CPR, you are performing the work that the heart can no longer do, due to Cardiac Arrest (heart stoppage). Every time the chest is compressed, this forces the blood in the heart round the body, and this keeps blood and oxygen flowing to all parts of the body, if not some.
However, CPR and Mouth to mouth alone are not good enough (even though it is better than no action at all). A machine called a defibulator (AED) is required. This machine sends a shock, that will hopefully make the heart beat again.

It is disruptive and ineffective to use CPR on someone who is both conscious, has pulse, and is breathing. When used on persons not breathing and or with no pulse properly, it can help save their life until medical personel arrive or at least provide the potential to save the victim's life as it prolongs the period of time the body goes without oxygen.
What about failed CPR?
As a first responder, we always perform CPR if the situation calls for it. We may never know if the CPR we performed was able to save the life or not. Depending on the medical emergency, there may be no chance for recovery. CPR will not always save a life, so if it is not able to it is OK. We will always perform CPR if the situation warrants and if it fails it is OK, We did our part to give the person the chance to be saved by our prompt response.
Can you get staph by giving CPR to save a life if they have staph?
If the infection wound is around the mouth area, you can be infected with staph from giving CPR. Using a breathing barrier (CPR mask) minimizes risks of transfer.
