Tolerance is not a virtue taught in The Bible, and for much of Christian history the Church persecuted all who disagreed with its teachings, including pagans and Cathars, even alleged witches. During the Reformation period, Catholics persecuted Protestants, and Protestants persecuted Catholics.

From the Catholic point of view, freedom of religion - the essence of tolerance - was finally recognised by the Second Vatican Council, which was convened in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. Protestant Churches followed a similar journey towards tolerance, although some fundamentalists are probably not there yet.

Christians are followers of Christ. And though out the life of Jesus He was tolerant to all, Christians are also expected to be this way.
